Lynn Nottage has authored the stage piece Intimate Apparel. Center Stage in Baltimore, Maryland, and South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, California, collaborated on the play's production and commission. The drama took place in New York in 1905, and it tells the story of a young African-American lady who moves there to follow her goals and establish herself as a seamstress.
From February 21, 2003, at Center Stage in Baltimore, Maryland, to March 30, 2003, the play received its global debut. Shane Williams played Esther, Brenda Pressley played Mrs. Dickson, Kevin Jackson played George Armstrong, Sue Cremin played Mrs. VanBuren, and Erica Gimpel played Mrs. VanBuren. The play was directed by Kate Whoriskey (Mayme). It then had a run at the South Coast Repertory under the direction of Whoriskey and with the same Center Stage ensemble from April 11, 2003, to May 18, 2003.
The Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles staged it from July to September 2004; the Southern Repertory Theatre in New Orleans staged it from January to March 2005; the Steppenwolf Theatre Company staged it in January 2005; the City Theatre staged it in May 2007; the Two River Theater staged it in September and October 2010; the Artists Repertory Theatre staged it in September and October 2014; the New Jewish Theater staged it in January 2017; and many other regional theaters have staged it as well.
