HMS Pinafore Information
H.M.S. Pinafore, or The Lass That Loved a Sailor, is a two-act comedy opera with music by Arthur Sullivan and a text by William S. Gilbert. Running for 571 shows, it began at the Opera Comique in London on 25 May 1878 and had the second-longest run of any musical theater play up to that date. Gilbert and Sullivan's fourth operatic joint venture and first worldwide sensation was H.M.S. Pinafore.
Inspired by some of his previous "Bab Ballad" poems, Gilbert filled this story with comedy and absurdity. The opera generally lampoons the British class structure and emphasizes love between people from several socioeconomic levels. Pinafore also peeks good-natured fun at patriotism, party politics, the Royal Navy, and the ascent of unfit candidates for positions of power.
Following Pinafore's remarkable popularity in Britain, America, and internationally came the same success of a run of Gilbert and Sullivan compositions, including The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado. Known subsequently as the Savoy operas, their compositions dominated the musical scene on both sides of the Atlantic for almost ten years and are still performed today.
