Hamlet - The Play Information
Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, or The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, was composed between 1599 and 1601, though the exact date is unknown. With 29,551 words, it easily surpasses any other Shakespeare play. The play is set in Denmark and tells the story of Prince Hamlet's quest for vengeance against his uncle Claudius, who killed the king and married the queen.
With a plot that can be "seemingly endlessly retold and adapted by others," Hamlet is often regarded as one of the "most powerful and influential tragedies in the English language." Several works have been proposed as probable inspirations for Shakespeare, from ancient Greek tragedies to Elizabethan plays. The Arden Shakespeare editors raise concerns about the concept of "source hunting," arguing that it assumes writers will always need to draw inspiration from previous works to create their own and imply that no writer can have an original idea or be an originator.
Shakespeare's time was filled with tales about sons seeking revenge for the death of their fathers, and many of these tales featured cunning avengers who pretended to be naive to outwit their enemies. Shakespeare seems to have been familiar with the narrative of the ancient Roman Lucius Junius Brutus, and the account of Amleth was preserved in Latin by the 13th-century writer Saxo Grammaticus in his Gesta Danorum, which was republished in Paris in 1514.
