On December 24th of, 1963, everything started. There was a party, and someone brought out their precious tape of Iolanthe to play. The Savoy Operas had been in the public domain under British copyright law for two years prior, on the fiftieth anniversary of Sir William Gilbert's death. Against this backdrop, Pat Kenan and his guests David Martin and others, debated Gilbert and Sullivan's aesthetic qualities.
What started as an excited chat between Ruth Clemens and Ruth Price at Allied Arts quickly spread like wildfire. To cap off their 1963 season, they convinced the Durham Theater Guild to stage a G&S opera. In May of that year, Paul Bryan and Bill McIlwinnen directed a performance of The Pirates of Penzance at Durham High School, and the show went on in incredibly short order.
The results were visible right away. Fans of Gilbert and Sullivan's work flocked to Durham to embrace the chance to perform the musicals they've written together. In a string of gatherings during 1963 and 1964, the organization came together and drafted its constitution. After much discussion, the group settled on the name Durham Savoyards Ltd., a play on Richard D'Oyly Carte's Savoy Theatre in London, where he first staged his G&S operetta plays.
