Bruce Robinson Information
Bruce Robinson (May 2, 1946) is an English novelist, screenwriter, actor, and director. He was born in London, England. As a young man, Robinson applied to and was accepted to London's prestigious Central School of Speech and Drama in pursuit of his acting dreams. Benvolio in Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet (1968) was his debut cinematic role. After that, he was in The Music Lovers (1970) by Ken Russell, Private Road (1971) by Barney Platts-Mills, and The Story of Adèle H. (1975) by François Truffaut.
After being out of employment for some time and relying on social security benefits, he felt disillusioned and decided to try his hand at screenwriting. Soon after, David Puttnam hired him to pen the script for Roland Joffé's The Killing Fields (1984). Robinson received a British Academy Film Award and was nominated for an Academy Award. Robinson returned to Joffé in 1989 with another installment of Fat Man and Little Boy. After a long hiatus from performing, he made a brief comeback in 1998 with a part in Still Crazy.
Most people recognize him as the mind behind the semi-autobiographical film Withnail and I (1987), which is based on his experiences as a jobless actor. According to rumors, his buddy Vivian MacKerrell inspired the character of "Withnail," while Marwood's "I" served as a stand-in for himself. Despite its poor performance in theaters, "one of Britain's biggest cult films" labels it due to its popularity on home video. Richard E. Grant also started in the film industry because of this role.
