Appropriate Information
Appropriate is a theatrical play written by American writer Branden Jacobs-Jenkins in 2013. In 2023, as part of the 2023–2024 season at Second Stage Theater, the play had its Broadway premiere at the Hayes Theater, starring Sarah Paulson. The dysfunctional Lafayette family is back in Appropriate, this time at a ruined Arkansas plantation estate, to fight over their father's estate. An artifact unearthed from their family's history sparked a feud that exploded generations of hatred.
The piece was developed by Jenkins in 2011 while he participated in the Sundance Institute Theatre Lab and the Vineyard Arts Project. Actors Theatre of Louisville staged the play's initial performance as part of the Humana Festival of New American Plays. The Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago and the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington D.C. were the subsequent 2013 venues for the play's subsequent performances.
The 2023–2024 season of Second Stage Theater's production of Appropriate, directed by Lila Neugebauer, takes place at the Hayes Theater on Broadway, as announced on June 15, 2023. The opening was on December 18, 2023, while previews started on November 29, 2023. Once the show's run at the Hayes Theatre concludes, it is anticipated to move to the Belasco Theatre following a second extension.
