Antigone Information
Sophocles' Antigone is an Athenian tragedy first staged during the Festival of Dionysus in 441 BC (or before). After Ajax, composed about the same time, it is considered Sophocles's second oldest extant play. Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus, and this play make up a group of tragedies called the three Theban plays. Sophocles composed Antigone first, even though its events occur last in the order of those depicted in the plays. The story continues where Aeschylus' Seven Against Thebes leaves off, expanding on a preexisting Theban mythology. Antigone is the title character in the play.
When Oedipus went into exile, his sons Eteocles and Polynices fought among themselves for the crown of Thebes. Both brothers ultimately perished in the conflict. Creon, Oedipus's brother-in-law and the new ruler of Thebes, had Eteocles lionized and Thebes' traitor Polynices publicly humiliated. Antigone tries to bury her brother despite her uncle's decision because she values her family ties to him more than the dictates of human law, and the story follows her as she does so.
