Anna Deavere Smith (September 18, 1950) is an American playwright, actress, and professor. Smith was born and grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. She attended the school very shortly, right after integrating public schools in the city. Smith attended both majority-white and majority-black schools during her lower years. She graduated from the historic Western High School, an all-girls school. Smith later attended Beaver College (now Arcadia University), where she studied acting. Graduating in 1971, Smith was
one of seven African-American women in her class. She started to identify as black during her college. Later, Smith moved to the West Coast for graduate work. She earned an M.F.A. in Acting from the famous American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, California.
Smith started her career by appearing in a wide variety of stage productions. Some of the notable ones include her role of Mistress Quickly in an Off-Broadway production of Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor. It was produced by Joseph Papp and the New York Shakespeare Festival. Smith has also worked in many hit films such as Dave (1993), Soup for One, Philadelphia (1993), The American President (1995), Rachel Getting Married (2008), Rent (2005), Unfinished Business, The American President, The Manchurian Candidate, and a few more.
