Peter Rothstein wrote and directed All Is Calm, and Erick Lichte arranged the score and oversaw the vocals. The year is 1914, and Christmas takes place on the Western Front. Based on the unbelievable true story of a German soldier who, in the middle of No Man's Land, started singing "Stille Nacht" and ushered in an unparalleled night of song and calm.
Both sides' armies of thousands disarm and approach the enemy. Tobacco, chocolate, and rum were among the gifts exchanged. Before returning to the trenches and recreating a world that would last until 1918, they sang songs, played soccer, and buried each other's dead.
This performance features music from all countries that fought in the war, including patriotic anthems, songs from the trenches, heartfelt ballads, and even Christmas carols. Rothstein fashioned this piece after a radio musical drama to mimic the dominant form of mass media. He relied on poems, notebooks, letters, war records, and even radio transmissions to convey the essence of this unique moment in world history and this demonstration of human heroism.
