A Few Good Men Information
David Brown's 1989 Broadway production of Aaron Sorkin's play A Few Good Men received critical acclaim. While defending two US Marines accused of murder, a team of military lawyers discovers a high-level conspiracy at a court-martial.
The play was inspired by a conversation Sorkin had with his sister Deborah, a recent law school graduate who was then serving in the Navy JAG Corps for three years. To defend a group of Marines who nearly killed a fellow Marine during a hazing session authorized by a superior officer, she was heading to Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. While working as a bartender at the Palace Theatre on Broadway, Sorkin took notes during the first act of the musical La Cage aux Folles and penned much of his tale on cocktail napkins.
On November 15, 1989, Tom Hulce as Lt. j.g. Daniel Kaffee, Megan Gallagher as Lt. Comm. Joanne Galloway, and Stephen Lang as Col. Jessep debuted in a production directed by Don Scardino at New York's Music Box Theatre. Later in the run, Michael O'Hare took over for Lang as Jessep. Sorkin converted his essay into a screenplay for the 1992 film of the same name.
