WCAR was founded in August 2005 by high school seniors named Joshua Moore, Sean Zelda, Jonny Nabors, Mark Myatt, and Dave Stephens, by the name "This Emergency." The band underwent several lineup changes. Current band members include Joshua Moore, Dave Stephens, Lou Cotton, David Puckett, and Andy Glass.
The music style of the WCAR is mostly metalcore and post-hardcore. Some of the notable studio albums released throughout the career of We Came As Romans include To Plant a Seed (2009), Understanding What We've Grown to Be (2011), Tracing Back Roots (2013), We Came as Romans (2015), and Cold Like War (2017).
