Typhoon Information
Typhoon is an American indie rock band. They are based in Portland, Oregon. The current lineup consists of Ben Morton (guitar), Paul Laxer (producer and engineer), Shannon Steele (violin and vocal), Alex Fitch (drums and vocal), Pieter Hilton (drums and vocals), Eric Stipe (trumpet and vocals), Devin Gallagher (percussion, ukulele, and vocals), Tyler Ferrin (horns, vocals, guitar, and piano), Dave Hall (guitar and vocals), Toby Tanabe (bass and vocals), and Kyle Morton (guitar, piano, songwriter, and lead vocals).
Typhoon was created in Portland in 2005 by buddies from high school who had moved from Salem, Oregon. The band's name, which was initially a working title, refers to a trip to Japan that some of the members took. Typhoon recorded and self-released their debut album in 2005. The band was active in the Portland house party scene for the next five years, and it added new musicians from the Portland music community to its lineup.
Hunger & Thirst, Typhoon's sophomore album, was released in 2010. Tender Loving Empire, a Portland-based record company, published the album as their debut. Typhoon was named number two on Willamette Week's annual list of Portland's top ten new bands.
Typhoon made its Late Show with David Letterman debut, performing "The Honest Truth," which was named number 3 on Paste magazine's list of the 50 best songs of 2011. Typhoon performed with Lady Lamb the Beekeeper and opened for The Thermals, Quasi, Yann Tiersen, Explosions in the Sky, The Decemberists, Belle and Sebastian, and The Shins during this time.
