The Steepwater Band Information
The Steepwater Band is a rock band with a current lineup consisting of Joe Bishop (bass guitar), Eric Saylors (second guitar and vocals), Joe Winters (drums), and Jeff Massey (guitar and vocals). The band's name was inspired by a cargo ship that Massey saw in a port on Lake Michigan. On October 29, 1998, the band held their first show at Phyllis' Musical Inn in Chicago, focusing on their interpretations of classic blues tunes, notably electric Chicago-style blues.
The band advanced swiftly from playing blues melodies to developing their music. The band met singer-songwriter, Michael Connelly in 1999, and the two collaborated on their first album, the five-song EP Goin' Back Home. The Steepwater Band reciprocated by performing on Connelly's Bottles of Wine project. In 2000, Connelly joined The Steepwater Band for the first time.
Brother to the Snake, the band's debut full-length record, was released in 2001 to a sold-out crowd at Chicago's Double Door with the help of radio station WXRT and Jim Beam. The band also released a live-in-the-studio CD, Live...Half in the Bag, during the year. In 2002 and 2003, the band continued to perform in the Midwest, typically as an opening act. The band inked a recording, management, and publishing deal with Funzalo Records/Artist Mike's Management during this time.
