The Feelies Information
The Feelies is an American rock band. The current lineup consists of Dave Weckerman (percussion), Brenda Sauter (bass guitar, violin, and backing vocals), Stan Demeski (drums and percussion), Bill Million (percussion, vocals, and guitars), and Glenn Mercer (percussion, keyboards, vocals, and guitars). After forming in 1976 and releasing four albums, they broke up in 1992. The group reformed in 2008 and new albums were produced in 2011 and 2017.
Despite their lack of economic success, the Feelies impacted American indie music's growth. R.E.M. credited their first album, Crazy Rhythms (Stiff Records, 1980), for shaping their style. The Beatles, the Velvet Underground, and Lou Reed all impacted The Feelies. Although Peter Buck of R.E.M. co-produced their second album, The Good Earth, one of their most popular albums, The Feelies rarely collaborated with outside producers. In the 1980s, they frequently performed at Maxwell's, a bar/restaurant and live music venue in Hoboken.
The band played a band during a high school reunion in the 1986 Jonathan Demme film Something Wild. They were given the name "The Willies," and they played snippets of five songs, including "Crazy Rhythms" and "Loveless Love," as well as versions of "Fame" by David Bowie and "I'm a Believer" by The Monkees (written by Neil Diamond).
