Terry Allen Information
Terry Allen (May 7, 1943) is a Lubbock, Texas-based musician and artist. As a musician, Allen has released an array of albums spanning Texas country and outlaw country. As a visual artist, he has dabbled in painting, conceptual art, performance, and sculpture, with several of his bronze works on display in public spaces around the U.S. He now resides in Santa Fe, NM.
The seminal albums Juarez (1975) and Lubbock (On Everything) (1979) are two of Allen's 12 studio albums of original music. Among many who have covered his song "Amarillo Highway'' are Bobby Bare, Sturgill Simpson, and Robert Earl Keen. On the other hand, Guy Clark, Little Feat, Lucinda Williams, Ricky Nelson, David Byrne, and Doug Sahm are among the other musicians who have recorded songs by Allen.
His career, which began with Juarez, is characterized by Rolling Stone as "uniformly eccentric and uncompromising, savage and beautiful, literate and guttural."
Video, sculpture, painting, drawing, and musical and theatrical performances are just a few of Allen's many media works. He also creates installations that combine several forms of art. The U.S. and other countries have hosted exhibitions of his art many times.
An appearance by Allen on "Ghost of Travelin' Jones" from Ryan Bingham's 2007 album Mescalito is noteworthy. After losing his dog, Allen and Guy Clark wrote "Queenie's Song" for Allen's 2013 album "Bottom of the World."
