Tamela Jean Mann (June 9, 1966) is an American actress, singer, and songwriter. She was born in Fort Worth, Texas. Mann started in the music industry as a Kirk Franklin and the Family gospel ensemble member. During her time with Franklin's band, she sang lead on several songs, including "Now Behold the Lamb" and "Lean on Me," including Mary J. Blige, Crystal Lewis, R. Kelly, and Bono. The albums Gotta Keep Movin' and The Master Plan marked the beginning of her solo career.
The RIAA certified her third studio album, Best Days, as gold because it debuted at number one on the Billboard Gospel Albums chart. As the album's first single, "Take Me to the King," was a financial success, it also got her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Performance. In addition to the success of her fourth studio album, One Way (2016), which peaked at No. 1 on the Gospel Albums chart, the track "God Provides" from that album went on to win the 2017 Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance/Song.
Actress Mann is a household name. She plays Cora Simmons, a character in several Tyler Perry movies. She has also won multiple NAACP Image Awards, a Billboard Music Award, an American Music Award, and a BET Award, in addition to the Grammy. She was honored with a spot on the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022.
