Actress and singer Sy Smith hails from the United States. Sy Smith started as the leader of a six-piece go-go band named "In Tyme" in Washington, DC. She relocated to Los Angeles after earning her BS in psychology and an MT-B from Howard University. She quickly rose to prominence after providing backing vocals for such artists as Usher, Eric Benet, Me'Shell NdegeOcello, Ginuwine, Brandy, and Whitney Houston for over a year. Amid everything, Smith was a regular cast member on Ally McBeal, starring behind Vonda Shepard on FOX.
Smith relocated to Los Angeles in 1997 and, in 1999, signed with Disney's record company Hollywood Records. Her debut single, "Gladly," was released that same year, and it peaked at number 79 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Smith's follow-up song "Good N Strong" was released in the early 2000s. Smith was dismissed from his record label, Hollywood Records, in 2001. Smith briefly appeared in All About You that same year, playing the restaurant singer. Since then, she has collaborated with Santana, sung backup for Whitney Houston, and co-starred on "Ally McBeal" with Vonda Shepard.
Smith started B!tchcraft in 2001 after he talked to the owners of a coffee shop in the Leimert Park area of Los Angeles. After nearly two years, the monthly display finally came to an end. Three or four female performers, including unsigned and signed singers and comedians, were featured during the showcase. On their album We Won't Stop, British funk band The Brand New Heavies recruited Smith to fill in as lead singer between albums.
