Strange Advance Information
Originally, Strange Advance had Drew Arnott (keyboards, percussion, vocals), Darryl Kromm (lead vocals, guitars), and Paul Iverson (bass). In 1980, three gathered in Vancouver and established the band. They were formerly known as Metropolis, but they changed their name after learning of a German band with the same name.
The title track, "Worlds Away," from the band's debut album, received moderate rotation in 1983 in North American markets. Bruce Fairbairn, best renowned for his work with Loverboy and Prism, served as the album's producer, yet the result sounded nothing like either of those bands. Strange Advance's sound combined progressive rock and new wave, focusing on synthesizers and keyboards rather than mainstream hard rock.
When Iverson quit the band after the release of their debut record, he was never replaced. The album 2WO, produced by Arnott and featuring many session performers, also achieved gold in Canada and gave the band its first major Canadian hit with "We Run" in 1985. Before 1985, Arnott and Kromm's Strange Advance had never performed live. To back their first two albums, they toured Eastern Canada with studio musicians Ric deGroot (keyboards), Ian Cameron (guitar, violin), Joey Alvero (bass), and David Quinton (drums).
