Stephen Malkmus Information
Stephen Joseph Malkmus (May 30, 1966) is an American musician from Santa Monica, California. At the age of 8, Stephen’s family moved north to Stockton, where he attended Carpinteria’s Cate School, and later on, he went to Lodi’s Tokay High School. He did various jobs as a teenager, including flipping burgers and painting house numbers on street curbs. He also spent a night in jail at the age of 6 for consuming alcohol, which got him expelled from school.
Stephen Malkmus learned to play the guitar along with Jimi Hendrix’s recording of “Purple Haze.” He used to play in many Stockton-based punk bands during his high school, including The Straw Dogs, Bag O Bones, and Crisis Alert. Later on, Malkmus graduated from the University of Virginia, where he majored in history. He also worked as a disc jockey for the college radio station WTJU, and at the same time, he met fellow WTJU DJs David Berman and James McNew.
While Stephen Malkmus was living in Stockton during the 1980s, he founded Pavement with Scott Kannberg. Slanted & Enchanted was the first album by the pair that was released to critical acclaim. In 1999 Stephen Malkmus released his first self-titled album with a new band named The Jicks. Some of the other albums under this band are Pig Lib (2003) and Real Emotional Trash (2008).
As a solo artist, Malkmus released Groove Denied (2019) and Traditional Techniques (2020). Currently, he plays a Fender Stratocaster and a Guild S-100 and is a member of the rock group Silver Jews.
