Sonora Santanera Information
The Sonora Santanera Orchestra has performed Mexican tropical music for almost 60 years. The Sonora Santanera, established in 1955 under Carlos Colorado in Tabasco and modeled by a previous Cuban band named Sonora Matancera, had massive success in the 1960s.
In 1960, the band's name was changed to Sonora Santanera when the comedian Jess "Palillo" Martnez arranged for them to appear in Mexico City. From then until 1986, the band underwent many line-up changes without diverting attention from Carlos Colorado, who served as the group's primary musical arranger.
After Colorado died in 1986, some orchestra members went their separate ways to create Los Santaneros. Internacional Sonora Santanera is the new moniker for the remaining members. Although band members have rotated in and out since the 1980s, the band's music has remained mostly the same.
Due to an increasing number of band names, including "Sonora Santanera," the orchestra eventually took legal action and changed its name again in 2007 to Sonora Santanera de Carlos Colorado.
The crew has toured throughout the US, Central America, and South America and won many honors and recognitions. Santaner's music has been included in dozens of movies and TV shows, and they have published sixty albums to date. The band has been included on a national lottery ticket since 2010 and has won awards, including the Las Lunas del Auditorio. In 2009, the group was inducted into Mexico's musical hall of fame, the Salón de la Fama.
