Skydiggers Information
Skydiggers is a Canadian roots-rock band. The group's current lineup consists of Jessy Bell Smith, Noel Webb, Michael Johnston, Ron Macey, Josh Finlayson, and Andy Maize. West Montrose was originally founded as a pair by singer Andy Maize, formerly of Direktive 17, and lead guitarist Josh Finlayson, formerly The Ramblers.
The band was the first Canadian to sign to Enigma Records in 1989, and their self-titled first album was released the following year. The singles "Monday Morning" and "I Will Give You Everything" were released due to the album.
FRE Records was founded by some of Enigma's Canadian employees in 1992, and the band's second album, Restless, was released that year. Stokes departed the band at the same time. Mike Sloski and Steve Pitkin stepped in on drums until Joel Anderson was hired as the band's new permanent drummer. Restless' lead single "A Penny More," produced by John Oliveira and the band in Hamilton's Grant Avenue Studios, became the band's biggest hit.
Just Over This Mountain, the band's third album, was released in 1993. It cemented the band's reputation by winning many prizes, including the Juno Award for Most Promising Group. Road Radio was released in 1995 after the band signed with Warner Canada. However, FRE went bankrupt around this time, which meant that the band's early records were no longer publicly available. Cash left the band after the tour in promotion of the record.
