It's no secret that New Orleans has produced several renowned supergroups. Including former and current members of the Radiators, Papa Grows Funk, and Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes, the newest and arguably finest band of all time is Raw Oyster Cult. John Gros, founder of PGF and guitarist for the Radiators, and Dave Malone, frontman and guitarist for the Radiators, provide the band two of New Orleans' most distinctive lead vocals and monster Hammond B-3 organ playing, respectively. Ex-members Camile Baudoin (guitar/vocals) and Frank Bua, Jr. (drums) round out the stellar cast of characters. Dave Pomerleau, bassist, and vocalist for Johnny Sketch, manages his time so that he may perform with both groups.
Malone formed Raw Oyster Cult so that he could fulfill the desires of Rads' fans by playing their great songs live again. Ed Volker, the band's main songwriter, plans to have the band write original material, reinterpreting classic songs, and work on new compositions. Malone says, "It's amazing reimagining Rads tunes," adding vocal harmonies, which the Rads were not particularly well-known for. 'We're all having a blast performing together, and we can't wait to hear what new songs come out of this.' One thing is certain: a Raw Oyster Cult concert makes a wonderful racket.
