Poi Dog Pondering is a musical group that is well-known for its diverse musical genres. The current lineup of the band includes Frank (guitar, vocals, pennywhistle, and marimba), Susan Voelz (violin), Paul Mertens (sax, flute, and clarinet), John Nelson (various percussion, drums, bongos, and congas), Ted Cho (mandolin and guitar), Dave Max Crawford (theremin, synthesizer, clavinet, electric piano, flugelhorn, trombone, trumpet, piano, and organ), Kornell Hargrove (vocals), Dag Juhlin (guitar), Ron Hall (bass), Rick Geherenbeck (synthesizers, organ, clavinet, and Rhodes electric piano), Charlette Wortham (vocals), Robert Cornelius (vocals), Carla Prather (vocals), and Ryan Murphy (drums).
Frank Orrall originally founded Poi Dog Pondering in 1984. Initially, the group started as a solo project by Orrall. The first lineup was formed by the founding member and performed its first concert at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Throughout the years, the band has gone through several departures and additions to their lineup. The group embarked on a year-long Street Performance Busking tour across North America and eventually, in 1987, settled in Austin, Texas. They spent a few years in Austin and relocated to Chicago, Illinois in 1992. The group has worked with different record labels such as Platelectonic Music, Texas Hotel Records, Columbia, Tommy Boy Records, Barone, and Premonition Records.
Poi Dog Pondering has released several notable studio albums such as Poi Dog Wondering (1989), Wishing Like a Mountain and Thinking Like the Sea (1990), Volo Volo (1992), Pomegranate (1995), Natural Thing (1999), In Seed Comes Fruit (2003), 7 (2008), Audio Love Letter (2011), Everybody’s Got a Star (2015), and Remnants of Summer (2018).
