Paul Cherewick, better known by his stage as Paul Cherry, moves away from the heartbreak of his first album, Flavour, and toward satisfying his artistic needs on his second, Back on the Music. The new album's opening line, "Bouncing off the bottom: this pattern is the problem..." is a melancholy meditation on the artist's existence as a winding quest for inspiration, a supportive group, and the strength to keep both. Cherry staggers and fumbles his way back into loving his life and work throughout the upbeat, seemingly fine-on-the-outside compositions that make up his second album.
Inside Tootsie Roll, music takes the form of a snarling, trench-coated villain straight out of a classic Max Fleischer cartoon, reassuring the listener, "You know you want me." He repeatedly repeated the phrase, "Take me, take me," adding a falsetto layer to his original voice. It's almost as though Paul Cherry can achieve peace of mind by going to extremes, being restrained, and carefully analyzing himself. Back on the Music's title single has his velvety vocals and a lush arrangement over which he laments, "You want to play, but it don't pay." The lone, stuttering flute melody that leads us out of "It Happens All the Time" is only one example of anything that doesn't quite fit inside the confines of these tunes. Cherry's record obfuscates itself as "Music." She reveals that the road back to one's true identity is frequently rocky.
When he was a kid, Cherry started playing the banjo and guitar in a Detroit suburb. To pursue his dream of being a professional musician, he moved to Chicago to attend college and major in classical composition.
