Papa Mali Information
Malcolm "Papa Mali" Welbourne (May 6, 1957) is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and guitarist. In a concert at the Pauela Cannery in Haiku-Pauwela, Hawaii, on New Year's Eve of 2008/2009, Papa Mali, Matt Hubbard, and former Neville Brothers bassist James "Hutch" Hutchinson were joined by Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann.
Along with drummer Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead, bassist George Porter Jr. of the Meters (originally with Reed Mathis), and multi-instrumentalist Matt Hubbard, he established a new band called 7 Walkers in 2009. Response Records published their self-titled debut album on November 2, 2010. Robert Hunter and Papa Mali wrote the songs together. "King Cotton Blues" was one of the tracks when Papa Mali and Willie Nelson sang a duet. Papa Mali produced and oversaw the recording of the album in Austin.
John Chelew produced Papa Mali's 2015 album, Music is Love, released on the 429 Records label. With Mike Dillon and Dave Easley providing backup vocals, Music is Love included bassist Casandra Faulconer and drummer Johnny Vidacovich. In 2015, Papa Mali performed at SXSW.
