Ozomatli Information
Ozomatli is an American band that primarily plays rock, Latin, and hip-hop music. The band was formed in Los Angeles in 1995. The current band’s lineup consists of Wil-Dog Abers (occasional lead vocals, backing vocals, marimbula, and bass), Raul Pacheco (vocals, jarana, tres, and guitar), Justin ‘El Nino’ Poree (backing vocals, lead vocals, rap vocals, and percussion), Asdrubal Sierra (piano, lead vocals, and trumpet), Ulises Bella (melodica, keyboard, requinto jarocho, backing vocals, and saxophone), and Jiro Yamaguchi (backing vocals, drums, and percussion).
On June 16, 1998, Ozomatli released its self-titled debut album on Almo Sounds. This debut album brought success to the band by reaching mainstream success and following an appearance on the late-night talk show called Vibe!. The collection also reached number 7 on the Billboard Latin Albums chart and number 4 on the Billboard Latin Pop Albums chart.
Ozomatli released its second album entitled “Embrace the Chaos” on September 11, 2001. That time, many bands paused their concerts for a while, but Ozomatli continued their shows and all the musical activities that helped them get enough recognition throughout the country. The album did well and won the Grammy Award for the Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album category.
Ozomatli has worked with several labels since the day they are active such as Almo Sounds, Interscope, Concord/Real World, Downtown/Mercer Street, Hornblow! Vanguard, Cleopatra Records, and ONErpm. Their notable studio albums include Street Signs (2004), Don’t Mess with the Dragon (2007), Fire Away (2010), Ozomatli Presents Ozokidz (2012), Place in the Sun (2014), and Non-Stop: Mexico to Jamaica (2017).
