The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was founded in 1966 as a country-rock band from Long Beach, California. The band's music is defined as folk rock, folk, country, country rock, bluegrass, and country-pop. The current lineup of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band consists of Jeff Hanna – vocals, guitar, washboard, percussion; Bob Carpenter – keyboards, accordion, keyboard bass, vocals; Jimmie Fadden – drums, harmonica, percussion, vocals; Jim Photoglo – bass, acoustic guitar, vocals; Ross Holmes – fiddle, mandolin, vocals; and Jaime Hanna – guitar, vocals.
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was formed by singer-guitarist Jeff Hanna and singer-songwriter-guitarist Bruce Kunkel. "Buy for Me the Rain" was the first single that was a top 40 success. This single brought exposure to the group on The Tonight Show, Starring Johnny Carson. Ricochet was the second album by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band released in September 1967.
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band gained publicity, mainly as a novelty act, by appearing in the films For Singles Only, Paint Your Wagon, and a few more. Some of the band's notable studio albums are Rare Junk, Uncle Charlie & His Dog, Teddy, Stars & Stripes Forever, An American Dream, Partners, Brothers, and Friends, Welcome to Woody Creek. The band released only three live albums that are Alive, Live Two Five, and Circlin' Back: Celebrating 50 Years.
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band earned many awards and nominations during its career, including a 2004 – Grammy award, 2015 – Colorado Music Hall of Fame induction, 1989 – CMA award, 1990 – Plaque the StarWalk in Nashville, along with many nominations.
