Nervous Eaters Information
The Nervous Eaters had vocalist/guitarist Steve Cataldo, bassist Robb Skeen, and drummer Jeff Wilkinson and were among the earliest punk rock/rock and roll bands in Boston. They formed in 1973, but the name had been used for a while. On his single "Kerouac" and in concert, local rock legend the Rhythm Assholes had backed Willie Alexander.
They changed their name and debuted in March of 1976 at the Rathskeller (later renamed the Rat), the epicenter of the city's alternative music scene. Later that year, their debut single, "Loretta," was released on the Rat label, which was associated with the club.
Keeping a second guitarist was an early challenge for the band, but by 1978, Cataldo's childhood friend Alan Hebditch had become a permanent member. They were among the "punkier" bands of the time, along with the Real Kids and DMZ. They became one of the most well-known bands in the area by 1978. The punk rock–influenced "Just Head" was the B-side to their second Rat single, released in 1979.
After "Just Head" was released, the band recruited Jonathan Paley to replace the previous second guitarist. The band's ten-song demo, produced by Ric Ocasek of fellow scene act the Cars, caught the attention of major record labels. In 1980, Elektra Records released their debut album, produced by Harry Maslin.
