Modern English Information
Modern English is an English band founded in 1979 and originated from Colchester, Essex, England. The group’s music is classified as post-punk and new wave and was formerly known as The Lepers. The current lineup of Modern English consists of Robbie Grey on vocals, Gary McDowell on guitar and vocals, Michael Conroy on bass and vocals, and Stephen Walker on keyboard. A few of the past members include Richard Brown, Aaron Davidson, and Matthew Shipley. Modern English disbanded in 1987 but was reformed two years later. Again, the group separated after another two years in 1991 and reunited in 1995. Since then, the band has been playing with various lineups.
Modern English initially was signed to 4AD after releasing a single entitled Drowning Man/Silent (1979) on their very own ‘Limp’ label. The band then released two more singles on the new label entitled “Swans on Glass” (1980) and “Gathering Dust” (1980). Some of the other notable singles by Modern English are “Smiles and Laughter” 1981, “Life in the Gladhouse (12” Club Mix)” 1982, and “Life’s Rich Tapestry” 1990.
Modern English released its debut album in 1981 entitled Mesh & Lace. The early music by the band showed a strong Joy Division influence. After the Snow (April 1982), the group's follow-up album reached number 70 on the Billboard chart after releasing in the US. Ricochet Days 1984, Stop Start 1986, Pillow Lips 1990, Everything’s Mad 1996, Soundtrack 2010, and Take Me to the Trees 2016 are some of the other studio albums by Modern English.
