Michael Feinstein Information
Michael Jay Feinstein (September 7, 1956) is an American singer, music revivalist, and pianist. He is from Columbus, Ohio. He learned piano at the age of five, for a couple of months because her tutor got angry about his behavior. She complained that Feinstein was not reading the sheet music she provided him. Instead, he was more comfortable playing by ear. After graduating from high school, Feinstein started to work in a local piano for nearly two years, when he was only 20.
At the initial stage of his career, Feinstein served as musical consultant for the show named My One and Only, the 1983 Broadway show. By the mid-1980s, he was a nationally known cabaret singer-pianist who was famed for being one of the proponents of the Great American Songbook. The first CD by Feinstein was recorded in 1986, entitled Pure Gershwin, which was released in 1987. It was followed by Live at the Algonquin (1986), Remember: Michael Feinstein Sings Irving Berlin (1987), Isn't It Romantic (1988), The M.G.M. Albums (Elektra), Michael Feinstein Sings the Burton Lane Songbook, Vol. 1, Such Sweet Sorrow (Atlantic), Livingston and Evans Songbook (Feinery), and many others.
He also released three Live albums and one compilation album. In the early 1990s, Feinstein enjoyed an ambitious songbook project where he performed an album featuring collaborations with, Jerry Herman (Michael Feinstein Sings the Jerry Herman Songbook, 1993), Hugh Martin (1995), Jay Livingston/Ray Evans (2002), Burton Lane (two volumes: 1990, 1992), Jule Styne (1991), and many others.
For the Pasadena POPS in 2012, Feinstein was named Principal Pops Conductor.
