MC5 Information
The MC5, or MC5, is an American rock band from Lincoln Park, Michigan, active since 1963. Rob Tyner provided vocals, Wayne Kramer and Fred "Sonic" Smith played guitars, Michael Davis played bass, and Dennis Thompson drummed. VH1 has recognized MC5 as a seminal band in the history of American heavy rock. Many people consider their three albums to be classics, and their single "Kick Out the Jams" has been covered by many other artists.
Stephen Thomas Erlewine, writing for AllMusic, characterized the MC5 as "crystallizing the counterculture movement at its most volatile and threatening" because of their leftist political connections and anti-establishment lyrics and music, which helped to establish them as leading figures in the burgeoning punk movement in the United States. All the classic rock and roll genres were represented in their high-octane sound: garage rock, hard rock, blues rock, and psychedelic rock.
After a promising start that landed them on the cover of Rolling Stone in January 1969 and a story penned by Eric Ehrmann, MC5 released their first live album that same year. After gaining a following for their high-octane and politically charged live shows, the band's initial lineup disbanded in 1972, leaving behind only the 1969 album Kick Out the Jams.
