Matt Maltese is an English singer-songwriter who began writing songs at age 14, according to a Vice interview. Maltese started collecting and selling records when he was a youngster, and with the money he earned, he relocated to Camden, London. In 2015, Maltese posted his debut track, "Even If It's a Lie," to SoundCloud. Maltese signed with Café Bleu Recordings, a branch of Atlantic Records, following the single's release.
Maltese's second EP, In a New Bed, was published in 2016 through Café Bleu Recordings. Maltese released a song the following year, in 2017, called "As the World Caves In," which, as he explained in an interview, is about the idea that the then-UK Prime Minister Theresa May and the then-U.S. President Donald Trump would decide to have a romantic night together before starting a nuclear war. Following a cover by singer Sarah Cothran in May 2021, the song saw a comeback on TikTok.
Maltese launched his debut album, Bad Contestant, in June 2018. Jonathan Rado of the American indie rock band Foxygen produced the album. Maltese published Krystal in November 2019. Maltese produced, mixed, and recorded the album primarily in his private studio. Maltese began a headline UK tour in November 2019 after the release of Krystal, performing at six different venues.
