Mason Jennings (March 19, 1975) is an American folk-pop singer and songwriter. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. When Jennings started writing songs at age 13, he also learned how to play the guitar. Later, Jennings quit school and relocated to Minneapolisto focus on his musical career. Jennings produced his self-titled debut album in 1997 while handling all the instrumentation alone. He started playing weekly at the 400 Bar as the Mason Jennings Band in October 1998, when he was joined by the drummer Chris Stock and the bassist Robert Skoro. The two-week assignment took four months to complete.
The Mason Jennings Band won the 1999 "Picked to Click Poll" held by the Minneapolis-St. Paul newspaper, City Pages, in April 1999, six months after its formation. Chris Thomson, a saxophonist, was invited to play with them periodically, switching out Stock with Brazilian jazz drummer Edgar Olivera. Mason started doing national tours and deepened the range of his sound. The Minneapolis-St. Paul newspaper City Pages' 1999 "Picked to Click Poll" chose The Mason Jennings Band as the winner.
