Mark Lowry - Singer Information
Mark Alan Lowry (June 24, 1958) is an American singer, songwriter, and comedian born in Houston, Texas. Lowry is known for co-writing a song entitled “Mary, Did You Know?” and being a part of the Gaither Vocal Band (1988 to 2001 and 2009 to 2013). He has worked alongside Bill Gaither, David Phelps, and Michael English. Throughout his career, Lowry has recorded twelve albums in both comedy and music. He describes himself as a “Poster Boy for Hyperactivity.”
Lowry started his career by joining the evangelistic team at Liberty Baptist College. He began his official music career with singing. There were some long pauses in his singing performances that he would frequently fill in with a monologue. It soon came to his realization that the audiences were laughing at his monologues.
He wrote a hit song entitled “Mary, Did You Know?” which became a popular Christmas song. Numerous artists have performed it, including Pentatonix, Dolly Parton, Natalie Cole, Daniel Childs, Michael English, Wynonna Judd, Kenny Rogers, Clay Aiken, and Cee Lo Green.
Bill Gaither approached Lowry in 1988 and asked him to join the Gaither Vocal Band as the baritone. He worked for thirteen years for the group and resigned in June 2001. Lowry rejoined the band on January 14, 2009, and left once again in October 2013 to devote his time to his solo career. He released several albums later, such as “I Love to Tell the Story, A Hymns Collection.”
