Mark Farners American Band Information
Mark Farner (September 29, 1948) is an American musician. He was born in Flint, Michigan. Before joining Grand Funk Railroad with Don Brewer (drums) and Mel Schacher (bass guitar) in 1969, Farner was a member of Terry Knight and The Pack (1965–1966), The Bossmen (1966–1967), and The Pack (aka The Fabulous Pack) (1967–1968). In 1972, keyboardist Craig Frost joined the group. Farner's mother was of Cherokee descent.
Farner played guitar, sang lead vocals, and wrote most of Grand Funk Railroad's repertoire. His masterpiece "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" was released in 1970. In 1975, he penned the band's fourth top-five single, "Bad Time," which he also produced. Farner's solo career began after Grand Funk's initial breakup in 1976, with the publication of his 1977 self-titled debut and his 1978 No Frills album (both on Atlantic Records).
Recruiting Dennis Bellinger on bass, Farner and Don Brewer reformed Grand Funk in 1981, releasing two albums, Grand Funk Lives and What's Funk? In 1988, Farner released Just Another Injustice on Frontline Records as a solo effort. Some Wonderful, his third Frontline album, was released in 1991 and included a reworked Jesus cover of the Grand Funk Railroad classic of the same name.
