Mainly an instrumental, "Man or Astro-man?" fused the early 1960s surf rock style popularized by bands like Dick Dale and The Spotnicks with new wave and punk rock sounds of the 1970s and 1980s. The band "Man or Astro-man?" became famous for its high-energy live performances and wacky use of science fiction-inspired themes, audio samples, and out-of-the-way electrical equipment like theremins and tesla coils.
Their earlier albums, like Is It... Man or Astroman? and Destroy All Astromen!, featured more traditional surf rock instrumentation and sci-fi sound bite song introductions, while their later albums, like EEVIAC... and A Spectrum of Infinite Scale, utilized synthesizers and printers (like the Apple ImageWriter II) to create a more abstract, experimental sound.
