Luis Vargas Information
Luis Rafael Valdez Vargas (May 23, 1961) is a Dominican singer and musician. He was born in Monte Cristi Province, Dominican Republic. He was raised in a low-income family. When he met a local musician who taught him the guitar, he got involved in the bachata scene. Blas Durán and Eladio Romero Santos were important in developing his unique style. During the early 1980s, Vargas made his way onto the bachata scene. He pioneered the rise of bachata to the top of the Latin charts.
According to bachata historians, Rafael Montilla, a bachata sound engineer, inspired Vargas to use guitar pedals. In 1991, when Montilla was recording his album El Maiz, he used a chorus pedal on Vargas' guitar. Additionally, he is recognized as the pioneering bachatero who used humbucker pickups on acoustic-electric guitars. In the early 1980s, Luis Vargas released a string of self-produced, -promoted, and -sold albums.
Sony Discos (now Sony Music Latin) signed him in 1996, and he released Volvio el Dolor the following year. Before that, he had released music independently through José Luis Records. He breaks new ground as the label's first bachata artist. His güira player was Antony Santos, widely recognized as one of the greatest bachata artists ever. Vargas taught guitarist Santos. When Santos split out from Vargas's organization to start his own, the two factions quickly became enemies.
