Los Elegantes Information
Los Elegantes is a Madrid-based rock band from the 1980s. They began in 1979, with a sound and aesthetically influenced by the Mod movement. Juan Ignacio de Miguel, also known as "el Chicarrón," and guitarists Juanma del Olmo and Emilio López founded the band in 1979. They recorded their first demo, "Nada" and "No Charles más," with the help of Javier Teixidor, guitarist for the rock band Mermelada. Both songs were included in the third volume of the Viva el rol compilation by Chapa Discos, a Zafiro sub-label. They were also released as an independent single in 1980, the group's debut.
Since its inception, the group's repertoire has shown a definite interest in rock, rhythm and blues, and the mod revival of the 1970s. Their concerts became notable for the band's high quality and the frequent brawls that broke out among the audience, as happened at Madrid's Colegio Mayor San Juan Evangelista.
Los Elegantes' first album, "Put yourself on to dance!" was published in 1984 on the Zafiro label, founded by their mentor Rafa Abitbol. The song "Short sleeves (Zoot Suit)" was adapted from the Who (when they were still known as High Numbers) and released as a maxi-single version for dance floors. This strategy worked, and the ensemble became known to a larger public, becoming one of the era's musical revelations.
