Lila Downs Information
Ana Lila Downs Sánchez (September 9, 1968) is a singer-songwriter from Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, Mexico. She draws from Mexican folk and popular music as well as her compositions and those of others when performing. She also draws inspiration from Mexico's indigenous peoples, singing in Mixtec, Zapotec, Mayan, Nahuatl, and Purépecha, among others.
In 1994, she released Ofrenda, her debut independent album. Downs rose to fame after the release of her maiden studio album, La Sandunga, in 1999. With the album Border, which came out in Mexico and Latin America in the early 2000s, she became famous worldwide in 2001.
Lila Downs' eighth studio album, titled Balas y Chocolate (Bullets and Chocolate (in Spanish), was accompanied by her fifth concert tour, the Balas y Chocolate World Tour. The tour, promoting the new album of the same name, kicked up on March 26 at Mexico City's Plaza Condesa.
This world tour by Downs is his sixth overall. Concerts in Mexico, the USA, Spain, Colombia, and Chile were on the itinerary for 2019 and 2020. Unfortunately, Downs had to cancel or postpone most concerts until 2021 because of the pandemic. On July 4, 2022, Lila Downs played at Musiques en été in Geneva, Switzerland.
Lila Downs and her band played a sold-out show to 45,000 people in the harbor of Paimpol, Bretagne, France, on August 5, 2023, for the Festival "Chant de Marins" (Sailor's Songs).
