Growing up in Canada listening to country music, co-founder and guitarist Robbie Robertson was a natural early-on six-string player. Not too long afterward, he started penning and arranging his tunes.
In the 1960s, he met and paired off with rockabilly devotee Ronnie Hawkins. Completing the quintet were keyboardist Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, bassist Rick Danko, and Richard Manuel. With the classic "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," their self-titled album is regarded as innovative and memorable. Together, they kept chiseling out songs with a sharp, emotional intensity.
Releasing Music From Big Pink in 1968, the band presented the fresh sounds of country rock. Bob Dylan discovered chemistry on this LP, memorably fronting the group featuring his song, "I Shall Be Released." The band is well-known for supporting Bob Dylan on his 1965 tour, helping the folk singer negotiate his difficult path into "electric" prominence.
