Les Claypool Information
Leslie Edward Claypool (September 29, 1963) is a prominent American singer, writer, record producer, director, and author born in Richmond, California. Since the band's inception in 1984, he has held the roles of principal composer, lead vocalist, and bassist for Primus.
After forming in the mid-1980s as "Primate," with bassist Les Claypool, guitarist Todd Huth, and a few different drummers (most notably Jay Lane), Huth and Lane would eventually leave to pursue other endeavors. In addition to combining funk with other styles, Claypool is seen as the band's boss. Claypool is the only member of Primus with a funk background, and he uses the slap-bass technique, which is common in funk music, regularly.
Claypool toured extensively with Primus between May 2010 and July 2013, featuring Larry LaLonde and the return of original Primus drummer Jay Lane. The news that Jay Lane had left Primus and was playing again with Bob Weir in RatDog was released on September 25, 2013. Tim Alexander has been named as his successor.
On January 19, 2016, it was revealed that Bonnaroo 2016 will mark the premiere of The Claypool Lennon Delirium, a collaboration between Claypool and Sean Lennon. The duo's debut album, Monolith of Phobos, was confirmed for June 3, 2016, but released on March 21, 2016. February 22, 2019, saw the release of their second album, South of Reality.
His appearance on Death Grips' May 31, 2016 track, "More Than The Fairy," was widely celebrated.
