Lea Salonga Information
Maria Lea Carmen Imutan Salonga is an actress and singer born in Manila, Philippines, best known for her musical theatre roles. Salonga started with the lead role of Kim in the musical called “Miss Saigon.” Salonga was 18 years old at that time, performing first in the West End and then on Broadway. Salonga won the Theatre World Awards and Olivier awards for her role. She was also honored as the first Asian woman to win the Tony Award.
In 1993, Salonga became the first Filipino artist to sign a record deal with Atlantic Records. She was also the first of Asian descent who played the roles in the musical Les Miserables of Eponine and Fantine. Salonga provided the voices of two official Disney Princesses, including Fa Mulan in Mulan (1998) and Jasmine in Aladdin (1992).
Salonga made her professional debut back in 1978 when she was seven appearing in the musical called “The King and I.” In 1980, she played the title role in Annie and had appeared on other notable productions such as Can on a Hot Tin Roof, The Fantasticks, Paper Moon, The Goodbye Girl, The Rose T, The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
Salonga has released many solo albums throughout her career, including Small Voice, Lea, Lea Salonga, I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing, Lea.. In Love, By Heart, Lea Salonga: The Christmas Album, Songs from The Screen, and Inspired.
