Land of Talk Information
Elizabeth Powell's musical career began as a solo artist named ELE K*. In 2003, their self-titled debut album was published by the Canadian indie label Sinistre Sound. Growing up in Guelph, Ontario, Powell started composing songs at fourteen. After joining Concordia University's jazz program, she met Chris McCarron and Mark Wheaton, with whom she would later establish the band Land of Talk. Eric Thibodeau took over for Wheaton on drums to finish the new lineup in May of 2007.
Some Are Lakes by Land of Talk was released on Secret City Records in Canada and Saddle Creek Records in the United States. Bon Iver's Justin Vernon served as the album's producer before its October 7, 2008 release. Andrew Barr of The Slip plays drums on the record. During their final show together, Powell announced that the band would take a break after their tour with Broken Social Scene. Instead of taking a break, McCarron left (amicably) to play guitar for The Dears, and the band never reunited. Joe Yarmush took over for him, and the band has already scheduled a 2009 West Coast trip.
On April 4, 2006, Dependent Music issued the band's debut extended play, Applause Cheer, Boo Hiss. The song "Summer Special" addresses the tragic consequences of internal feminine strife and the disappointment of giving in to harmful gender norms.
