The Mexican singer and songwriter Alberto Valadez performs under the stage, Juan Gabriel. His outlandish, theatrical demeanor and vast work have earned him widespread renown. Valadez remains one of the most successful Latin American singer-songwriters, with over 50 million recordings sold worldwide. Recuerdos, Vol. II, an album he released in the mid-1980s, is the best-selling album in Mexico's history.
A teacher inspired Valadez to write his first song when he was 13. He was born in 1950 in Paracuaro, Michoacan. The experience of singing in the church choir piqued his interest in music, and by 1965 he was making his television debut on Noches Rancheras. After years of singing in bars, Valadez signed with RCA Victor and, in 1971, published his debut album El Alma Joven... As a result of the success of "No Tengo Dinero," the album would be certified gold, and Valadez would become a household name.
Valadez's extraordinary skill in genres as varied as mariachi, rock, and disco propelled him to the top of the Mexican music industry for the following two decades.
