Jonathan Coulton (December 1, 1970) is often called "JoCo" by his fans. He is an American folk/comedy singer and songwriter from Brooklyn, New York City. His music type is defined as folk-rock, indie rock, art rock, geek rock, and alternative rock. JoCo plays many instruments such as banjo, ukulele, zendrum, accordion, harmonica, vocals, guitar, mandolin, glockenspiel, and analog synthesizers. Coulton graduated from Yale in 1993.
Coulton was in a short-lived band called SuperGroup in the 1990s. He also worked as a former computer programmer employed at Cluen, and in a New York City software company. He used to write quirky, witty lyrics about science fiction and technology. Some of his songs include 2005's "W's Duty" and 2006's "Tom Cruise Crazy."
Coulton was also the Musical Director for The Little Gray Book Lectures. He also wrote and performed a song named "Still Alive" for the ending credits of the 2007 Valve video game named Portal. Another version on the Orange Box Original Soundtrack was added with Coulton's vocals. Some of the popular songs by Coulton are "Code Monkey," "Re: Your Brains," "Want You Gone," "Still Alive," and a few more.
A few of his notable studio albums are Smoking Monkey (2003), Thing a Week One, Two, Three, and Four (all in 2006), Artificial Heart (2011), Solid State (2017), and Some Guys (2019). Coulton also released two EPs and four compilation albums.
