Jay and the Americans are a rock band founded in 1960 and originated from Belle Harbor, Queens, New York. The group is also known as Chapter Four and plays pop-rock. The band’s current lineup consists of Sandy Deane – vocals, Howard Kane – vocals, Marty Sanders - guitar, vocals, and Jay Reincke - lead vocals. Some former members include Kenny Vance – vocals, Jay Traynor - lead vocals, and Jay Black - lead vocals.
Jay and the Americans were discovered when the members were performing in student venues at New York University. The group auditioned for Leiber and Stoller, who later gave the group’s name. Soon the group signed its first deal with United Artists Records and released its first hit, “She Cried.” It was released at number 5 on the Billboard charts in 1962. Some of the other notable hits by the band are “Only in America,” “Come a Little Bit Closer,” “Cara Mia,” “This Magic Moment,” “There Goes My Baby,” “Capture the Moment,” and “(I’d Kill) For the Love of a Lady.”
Initial notable studio albums by Jay and the Americans include Come a Little Bit Closer, Sunday and Me, Livin’ Above Your Head, Try Some of This!, and Wax Museum, Vol. 2. The band also released a few compilation albums such as Jay & The Americans Greatest Hits, Early American Hits, Come A Little Bit Closer: The Best of Jay and The Americans, and Masterworks 1961-1971 (3 CDs). Jay and the Americans were featured in the Universal comedy film Wild Wild Winter in 1966 and were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002.
