Jack Kays' music is surprisingly easy to understand but difficult to categorize, fusing the catharsis of punk and emo with hardy acoustic folk and sporadic diversions into cloud rap. The Ohio native achieved viral success with his sparse yet forceful acoustic tracks, particularly "Morbid Mind," after a few small releases. Early in 2021, after signing with Columbia Records, Kays released his debut album, Mixed Emotions. Later that year, Travis Barker and I collaborated on the EP My Favorite Nightmares.
Kays struggled with addiction as a teen and was frequently in problems while growing up in Cincinnati. He recorded minimalist cloud rap songs as a kind of solace and self-expression. Later, he drifted toward an intimate acoustic sound centered only on his acoustic guitar and voice. Kays went to culinary school and obtained employment in several kitchens while gigging on the side, all while his music career was only getting started. He was initially hesitant to use the social networking site TikTok, but his then-new management persuaded him to submit a song.
The lyrical and melancholy "Morbid Mind" went viral on social media, and Kays quickly exploited his newfound notoriety to sign a major-label deal with Columbia. Personal songs like "Gin n Juice" and "Bottom of the Bottle," which drew on his own experiences, helped build anticipation for his debut album, Mixed Emotions, which was released in February 2021. By working together on the collaborative EP My Favorite Nightmares with Travis Barker, Kays ended the year.
