Ibeyi Information
Sisters Naomi Diaz and Kainde Diaz make up one half of the French musical group Ibeyi. They were born in the City of Lights, Paris. Their father, Anga Diaz, was a renowned Cuban percussionist who played alongside Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, and Máximo Francisco Repilado Muoz, aka Compay Segundo, in the Buena Vista Social Club ensemble and won a Grammy for his work with the Latin jazz band Irakere.
After his passing in 2006, Naomi, then 11 years old, took up the cajón, one of his most recognizable instruments. The sisters have an interest in Yoruba music together. Maya Dagnino, a French-Venezuelan singer and the sisters' mother, manages them and has supported Lisa-Kainde's musical endeavors.
They inked a deal with XL Recordings in 2013. Their 2015 self-titled first album features contributions from just label owner Richard Russell. The album, which they released when they were 20 years old, honors their late father and, in the song, Yanira, their older sister, who passed away in 2013.
A synth that could be a heart monitor plays as the song fades out. Video for the album's second hit, "River," gained them notoriety in 2014. The twins are in constant closeup, with one singing while the other holding their heads underwater.
