Hot Tuna Information
Hot Tuna is an American blues rock band founded in 1969 by former Jefferson Airplane members Jack Casady (bassist) and Jorma Kaukonen (vocals). With players arriving and leaving throughout the years, the band's nucleus has always remained Kaukonen and Casady's continuous cooperation, even if it has always been a fluid aggregation.
Jefferson Airplane's Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen, who were high on LSD and psychedelia, helped define San Francisco's sound and scored White Rabbit and Somebody To Love. Their love of American country and blues drove their live debut, Hot Tuna (1970), recorded over a week of events at New Orleans House in Berkley, California. They began performing acoustically together and performed before Jefferson Airplane gigs about 1968.
Along with a regular group of musicians, Hot Tuna developed from a modest celebration of folksy, traditional Americana into big blues-rock events, with Kaukonen's unique songs taking the front stage. The band, known for its free-form improvisation, gained a cult following by encouraging fans to capture their live concerts. They released Burgers (1972), The Phosphorescent Rat (1973), and Yellow Fever (1975) before separating in 1977.
