Headbangers Ball Information
Video clips from heavy metal bands were featured on MTV and its international affiliates in a show called Headbangers Ball. On its April 18, 1987, premiere, the show featured music videos by well-known and lesser-known heavy metal acts. The show stood in stark contrast to the Top 40 music videos typically played during the day, and this contrast helped make it renowned.
As alternative rock, grunge, pop punk, and rap music became more popular on the radio and the charts in the 1990s, the show's continued relevance was doubted, and Headbangers Ball was canceled in 1995. After an absence of more than eight years, the show returned to MTV2 as new forms of heavy metal gained economic traction and fan interest became inevitable. Despite its lingering online presence, the program was pulled from airing sometime in the early 2020s. Former Headbangers Ball host Riki Rachtman also hosted a new program called The Ball in March 2021.
Metal Mayhem, a spinoff of MTV Classic with a similar focus, has featured many videos originally broadcast on the series. DJ John Brent from Bury, Lancashire, coined the term "Headbangers Ball" for his successful rock and metal roadshows that he took on the road starting in 1980 and touring the entire United Kingdom. Numerous local newspapers and magazines covered the event, and rock magazines like Kerrang! and Sounds frequently featured John's Headbangers Ball Rock charts.
